At this age your child will be developing a strong sense of independence. They will be socialising mainly with children around their same age and building new relationships and friendships independent of their family.

Emotional/Social Changes Start to form stronger, more complex friendships and peer relationships. It becomes more emotionally important to have friends, especially of the same sex. Experience more peer pressure. Become more aware of his or her body as puberty approaches.

Between the ages of 4-5 years, your child will: Develop friendships. Express more awareness of other people's feelings. Enjoy imaginative play with other children, such as dress up or house. Get better at sharing and taking turns with other children.

Encourage physical activity. Encourage self-discipline; expect your child to follow rules that are set. Teach your child to respect and listen to authority figures. Teach your child to be aware of consequences of their behavior and empathy for others.

They understand and find it easier to express complex emotions such as pride, guilt, and shame. They are learning about ambivalence. That means they understand that we can sometimes feel a range of emotions about a single situation, such as excitement and fear at the idea of going down a big slide.
