The PWA accomplished the electrification of rural America, the building of canals, tunnels, bridges, highways, streets, sewage systems, and housing areas, as well as hospitals, schools, and universities; every year, it consumed roughly half of the concrete and a third of the steel of the entire nation.

The American Public Works Association (APWA) has announced the theme for 2023 National Public Works Week: "Connecting the World Through Public Works".

The Public Works Administration: Purpose The plan was to decrease unemployment and stimulate the economy to pull the country out of the Great Depression. Simultaneously, the PWA would create updated and increased infrastructure, including buildings, roadways, bridges, and dams.

Public Works Administration (PWA), in U.S. history, New Deal government agency (1933–39) designed to reduce unemployment and increase purchasing power through the construction of highways and public buildings.

It was liquidated on June 30, 1943, because of low unemployment during World War II. Robert D. Leininger asserted: "millions of people needed subsistence incomes. Work relief was preferred over public assistance (the dole) because it maintained self-respect, reinforced the work ethic, and kept skills sharp."
