A 501(c)(3) determination letter is an official document issued by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) signifying that a nonprofit organization gains tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC).

To request a copy of a determination letter issued before 2014, submit Form 4506-B, Request for a Copy of Exempt Organization IRS Application or LetterPDF using the email feature on the form. You can obtain replacement copies of your 501(c)(3) form through the IRS website or by using Form 4506-A.

You can obtain the letter by having an officer or trustee contact IRS Customer Account Services by phone, mail, or fax. If you submit the request in writing, be sure to include the organization's name, Employer Identification Number (EIN), and authorized signature of the officer or trustee.

Getting a 501(c)(3) Determination Letter After applying with the IRS for 501(c)(3) status, it may take between 3 and 6 months to get a determination letter confirming approval. The amount of time you can expect depends on the scale of the operation; it is not unheard of for some of the largest to take 12 months.

A ruling or determination letter will be issued to your organization if its application and supporting documents establish that it meets the particular requirements of the section under which it is claiming exemption.

Remember: If you use a pre-approved plan and don't make significant changes to it, you won't need a letter of determination. However, if you need to apply for a determination letter, use Form 5300, available on the IRS website. To amend a pre-approved plan, use Form 5307. If you're terminating a plan, use Form 5310.
