Purpose of Schedule Schedule A (Form 990) is used by an organization that files Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax, or Form 990-EZ, Short Form Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax, to provide the required information about public charity status and public support.

If an organization has gross receipts less than $200,000 and total assets at the end of the year less than $500,000, it can file Form 990-EZ, instead of Form 990.

Form 990-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations Not Required to File Form 990 or Form 990-EZ, is used by small, tax-exempt organizations for annual reporting and can only be submitted electronically.

Form 990-EZ requires you to report a lot of information, such as revenue, expense, assets, liabilities, activities, program service accomplishments, compensation details, and more. Whereas 990-N just requires you to report the basic information such as name, EIN, address, etc.

The following organizations cannot file Form 990-N (the e-Postcard) but must file different forms instead: Gross receipts over $50,000: Tax-exempt organizations with annual gross receipts that are normally greater than $50,000 must file Form 990PDF or Form 990-EZPDF. Private foundations must file Form 990-PFPDF.

Purpose of Form Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax, and Form 990-EZ are used by tax-exempt organizations, nonexempt charitable trusts (that are not treated as private foundations), and section 527 political organizations to provide the IRS with the information required by section 6033.

The primary difference between Form 990 and Form 990-PF is that Form 990 is required for tax-exempt organizations in general (such as public charities) while Form 990-PF is required specifically for private foundations.
