Archaeologists search for patterns in the evolution of significant cultural events such as the development of farming, the emergence of cities, or the collapse of major civilizations for clues of why these events occurred.

There are three main branches of study: prehistoric archaeology (cultures that do not have writing); protohistoric archaeology (cultures that have incomplete records); and historic archaeology (cultures that have well-developed historical records). As such, these branches of archaeology value different types of data.

Archaeology is the study of the human past using material remains. These remains can be any objects that people created, modified, or used. Portable remains are usually called artifacts. Artifacts include tools, clothing, and decorations.

Post-Secondary School. The minimum amount of education needed to work in the field of archaeology is a 4-year college degree (BA or BS). Usually archaeologists major in anthropology or archaeology. They also receive training in archaeological field and laboratory techniques.

Archeologist and archaeologist are both English terms. Archeologist is predominantly used in 🇺🇸 American (US) English ( en-US ) while archaeologist is predominantly used in 🇬🇧 British English (used in UK/AU/NZ) ( en-GB ). In the United States, there is a 72 to 28 preference for "archaeologist" over "archeologist".
