New Jersey Air Pollution Control Law consists of legislative and regulatory measures intended to limit the amount of harmful substances found in the air. In New Jersey, the federal Clean Air Act and the state Air Pollution Control Act (1954) are the most significant pieces of air pollution control legislation.

Incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons accounts for much of the formaldehyde present in the atmosphere. Automotive exhausts have been reported to contain formaldehyde at 29–43 ppm (Altshuller et al., 1961).

Manufacturers must certify diesel engines to a NOx idling emission standard of 10 g/hr in 2024-2026, and 5 g/hr in 2027 and later model years. In lieu of meeting the standard, engines may be equipped with an engine shutdown system.

The Midwest Clean Diesel Initiative (MCDI) is a collaboration of federal, state and local agencies, along with communities, non-profit organizations and private companies all working together to make a visible difference in our communities by reducing exposure to emissions from diesel engines and equipment.

By January 1, 2023, all class 7 and 8 diesel-fueled drayage trucks must have 2010 or newer engines. Trucks with 2010 or newer engines are fully compliant with both the Truck and Bus and Drayage regulations.
