The U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number may be found on a number of documents, including tax returns and forms filed with the IRS, and in the case of an SSN, on a social security card issued by the Social Security Administration.

ITIN. An ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is a tax processing number only available for certain nonresident and resident aliens, their spouses, and dependents who cannot get a Social Security Number (SSN). It is a 9-digit number, beginning with the number "9", formatted like an SSN (NNN-NN-NNNN).

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a 9-digit number the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues to people filing a tax return who are not U.S. citizens and who do not have or are not eligible for a Social Security number.

Use Form W-7 to apply for an IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). You can also use this form to renew an existing ITIN that is expiring or that has already expired.

ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have a U.S. filing or reporting requirement under the Internal Revenue Code. Individuals must have a filing requirement and file a valid federal income tax return to receive an ITIN, unless they meet an exception.

All valid ITINs are a nine-digit number in the same format as the SSN (9XX-8X-X), begins with a “9” and the 4th and 5th digits range from 50 to 65, 70 to 88, 90 to 92, and 94 to 99.

The notable change in the October 2023 revision of Form W-9 is the addition of a new line 3b. Flow-through entities, which pass their income through to their owners or partners for tax purposes, are now required to complete this line if they have direct or indirect foreign partners, owners, or beneficiaries.
