A citation is another word for a ticket. Both terms refer to a document issued by local or state law enforcement explaining that you are accused of committing a traffic offense, like speeding.

A citation identifies for the reader the original source for an idea, information, or image that is referred to in a work. In the body of a paper, the in-text citation acknowledges the source of information used. At the end of a paper, the citations are compiled on a References or Works Cited list.

Under cite and release, if a person receives a citation, instead of being arrested and sent to jail, the person receives a summons to report to a specific location at a later date to handle the charge(s). The officer can also issue a warning and let the person go without writing a citation.

First, not all states require the violator to sign traffic citations. Of those that do, the signature is an acknowledgement they have been cited, and they promise to appear in court or otherwise satisfy the citation (e.g. pay the fine) on or before the court date.

In many cases, a criminal violation results in a citation with a notice to appear in court on a certain date. That means a person can be charged without ever being formally arrested and taken to jail.

A “citation” is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the information necessary to find the location details of that source on the reference or Works Cited page. A citation must include a set of parentheses.

A criminal citation, on the other hand, starts the criminal justice pro- cess much as an arrest would. The primary difference is that the individual receives a court date and maintains their freedom without any need to be booked, have a bail hearing or risk immediate detention.

Police officers who have observed an ordinance violation or, upon investigating, have reason to believe a city ordinance violation has occurred may issue a citation to appear for trial instead of making an arrest, provided the person cited signs an agreement to appear and waives a warrant issuance.
