For tax years through 2025, the child tax credit allows eligible tax filers to reduce their tax liability by up to $2,000 per child. To be eligible for the Child Tax Credit, the child or dependent must: Be 16 years or younger by the end of the tax year. Be a U.S. citizen, national, or resident alien.

The maximum credit amount is $500 for each dependent who meets certain conditions. This credit can be claimed for: Dependents of any age, including those who are age 18 or older. Dependents who have Social Security numbers or Individual Taxpayer Identification numbers.

You'll also need to fill out Schedule 8812 (“Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents”), which is submitted with your 1040. This schedule will help you to figure out your child tax credit amount and how much of the partial refund you may be able to claim if applicable.

What is Form 8812? They must be a U.S. citizen, national, or resident. They must under the age of 17 by the end of the calendar tax year. They must live with you for more than half the year. They must receive over half of their support from you.

Additional Child Tax Credit for 2023 and 2024 The child is younger than age 17 at the end of the tax year. The child is your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, grandchild, niece, or nephew. You claim the child as a dependent.

These people qualify for at least $2,000 of Child Tax Credit, which comes out to $166 per child each month: Married couples with income under $400,000. Families with a single parent (also called Head of Household) with income under $200,000. Everyone else with income under $200,000.

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child (tax year 2023). If you owe less tax than the total of your CTC, you can use Schedule 8812 to claim up to $1,500 as a refundable credit through the Additional Child Tax Credit.

The Additional Child Tax Credit is calculated when a taxpayer has at least $2,500 in earned income. To calculation of the refundable Additional Child Tax Credit is 15 percent of earned income above $2,500, up to $1,500 per child.
