Usually, anyone who was paid $600 or more in non-employment income should receive a 1099. However, there are many types of 1099s for different situations. Also, there are many exceptions to the $600 rule, meaning you may receive a 1099 even if you were paid less than $600 in non-employment income during the tax year.

If you sold stock, bonds or other securities through a broker or had a barter exchange transaction (exchanged property or services rather than paying cash), you will likely receive a Form 1099-B. Regardless of whether you had a gain, loss, or broke even, you must report these transactions on your tax return.

As per the Internal Revenue Service's policies, you will need to file an amended tax return via Form 1040X (Amended U.S. Individual Tax Return) if you happen to forget reporting your income on 1099-B or end up filing an incorrect tax return in order to correct your mistake.

Unfortunately, there is not a minimum dollar amount to file it. Even though your gain is very small, the IRS may only receive the Proceeds/Sales amount. If that happens, they will send you a bill for taxes on the full amount of the proceeds, not just the gain.

Do not enter any withholding on Form 1099-B Proceeds From Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions in TaxAct®, since it is already reflected on your W-2. Your basis in all vested shares you receive is the amount included on your W-2 as income plus any amount you had to pay for the shares.
