Settled in 1791 and named for a prominent New York family, it is located in one of the state's richest farming areas. Manufactures include marine equipment, asphalt, machine tools, electronic equipment, filters, and plastic products. The area was part of a military reservation for veterans of the American Revolution.

Away from New York's flurry and bustle lies Cortlandt Manor, a hamlet in the Town of Cortlandt in northern Westchester County. Established in 1697 by Stephanus Van Cortlandt, this affluent neighborhood has a rich artistic history that blends well with its lavish suburban setup.

Known as the "Crown City" because of its location on a plain formed by the convergence of seven valleys, Cortland is situated about 1,130 feet above sea level, making it the uppermost city to crown the state.
