- If you are eligible for a property tax benefit, make sure to complete the respective sections; otherwise, only complete column B.
- In line 6, find New Jersey taxable income by subtracting line 5 from line 4.
- Calculate the tax on the amount reported in line 6 using the Tax Table or Tax Rate Schedules for line 7.
- For line 8, multiply the tax amount from line 7 by the credit percentage from line 3.
- Enter the income or wage tax paid to another jurisdiction in box 9a for line 9.
- On line 10, record the lesser amount between line 8 or box 9a. Note that this cannot exceed your New Jersey tax from line 43.
- If you are not eligible for a property tax benefit, input the amount from line 9, column B on line 44 of Form NJ-1040 without entering any amounts on lines 41 or 56.
- If you are eligible for a property tax benefit, complete Worksheet I on page 34 to assess whether you will receive a greater benefit through the Property Tax Deduction or the Property Tax Credit.
