It's a flat rate, so everyone who owes state income taxes pays on the same rate, regardless of income. The state gas tax now is 38.5 cents a gallon. That increases to 40.5 cents a gallon come Jan. 1, due to a formula that takes population growth and inflation into account.

California pumps out the highest state gas tax rate of 77.9 cents per gallon (cpg), followed by Illinois (66.5 cpg) and Pennsylvania (62.2 cpg). The lowest state gas tax rates can be found in Alaska at 9.0 cents per gallon, followed by Missouri (17.5 cpg) and Mississippi (18.4 cpg).

Federal excise tax rates remain at $0.183/gal for gasoline and $0.243/gal for diesel fuel. The Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Fund adds an additional $0.001/gal federal fee.

Fuel Decals are REQUIRED for the following: * All vehicles with a “registered weight” OR “actual weight” of over 26,000 lbs. * All vehicles with a “combined weight” of over 26,000 lbs (this means a “power unit” with an attached trailer, etc. with the weight of the combined unit weighing over 26,000 lbs.)
