He or she may have a maximum number of five nominees in attendance at each authorized academy at any one time. Normally, he or she has one or two vacancies each year.

Each Member of Congress is allowed five appointees at each Academy over a four year period. This means that in most years, Sen. Schatz will be making nominations for one vacancy at each Academy.

Unlike other Service Academies, the Merchant Marine Academy does not accept military-service connected nominations or Vice Presidential nominations. You'll be required to receive a nomination through Congress – either a State Senator or a local Congressional Representative.

Typically you are eligible for at least your U.S. Congressional Representative, your 2 U.S. Senators, and the Vice Presidential nomination. Each member of Congress is given 5 slots for each of three academies (West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy).

You should request a nomination from both of your U.S. senators and your U.S. representative. Because members of Congress want to nominate outstanding individuals from their state or district, they consider academic achievement, leadership performance and athletic participation.

You can be nominated to multiple academies depending on how well you have competed among this year's pool of candidates. It is also possible to win multiple appointments.
