She will be encouraged to breastfeed in response to her and her baby's needs, with at least 8-12 feeds in each 24 hour period. If bottle feeding, the mother will be encouraged to practice responsive parenting by responding to baby's cues, give the majority of feeds herself, hold her baby close and pace the feeds.

Ideally, infants should be put to breast within one hour of birth, breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months of life and continue to be breastfed up to 2 years of age and beyond. Starting at 6 months, breastfeeding should be combined with safe, age-appropriate feeding of nutritious solid, semi-solid and soft foods.
-
Start with small amounts of solid food, feeding with a spoon or allowing finger feeding, then gradually increase the amount as the infant eats more and develops. Avoid offering breast milk or formula until after the solid-food experience has wound down.
-
Most newborns need eight to 12 feedings a day — about one feeding every two to three hours. Look for early signs of readiness to feed. Signs include moving the hands to the mouth, sucking on fists and fingers, and lip smacking. Fussing and crying are later cues.

Give your child something to eat or drink about every 2 to 3 hours, or about 5 or 6 times a day. This will give your child about 3 meals and 2 to 3 snacks every day.
