The HIPAA Security Rule requires physicians to protect patients' electronically stored, protected health information (known as “ePHI”) by using appropriate administrative, physical and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and security of this information.

The Privacy Rule protects all "individually identifiable health information" held or transmitted by a covered entity or its business associate, in any form or media, whether electronic, paper, or oral. The Privacy Rule calls this information "protected health information (PHI)."

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) lays out three rules for protecting patient health information, namely: The Privacy Rule. The Security Rule. The Breach Notification Rule.

Your health information cannot be used or shared without your written permission unless this law allows it.
