What is a DD214? The Defense Department issues to each veteran a DD-214, identifying the veteran's condition of discharge - honorable, general, other than honorable, dishonorable or bad conduct. You can find a sample DD-214 which can help you determine if a veteran served in armed combat HERE.

In order to request a copy of a DD 214, the County Clerk's Office requires proof of age and identity in the form of a valid government issued or state issued photo identification. Information about the veteran is also required. The minimum information that is needed is the veteran's full name.

You can mail or fax your signed and dated request to the National Archives' National Personnel Record Center (NPRC). Be sure to use the address specified (either in the instructions on the SF-180 or in our online system, eVetRecs). Most, but not all records, are stored at the NPRC.

Generally there is no charge for basic military personnel and medical record information provided to veterans, next of kin and authorized representatives from Federal (non-archival) records.

Requesting your Documents DD-214s can be requested either on-line or by mail. You will receive your DD-214 from the Archives in about about three to four weeks.
