United States Copyright Office Public Catalog – This database shows all the copyrights registered with the US copyright office from 1978 onwards. It will then show who registered that copyright. Worldcat – This database can be used to search any CD releases and see who the publisher and label behind the release.

There are several ways to search for copyright registration records for scripts and other dramatic works. Use the Copyright Office database for works submitted after 1978. Items registered for copyright after 1978 may be found in the Copyright Online Catalog.

How do you check if something is copyrighted? We found out earlier that every original creative work is “copyrighted” as soon as it's written down or saved in some tangible form. If you want to check registrations, though, you need to use the search engine on copyright.gov.

In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Copyright Registration.”

Finding and verifying the copyright status for works published after 1978 is easy, as all copyright records since that date are available at cocatalog.loc.gov.

The Library cannot give you permission to use items in our collections, because we generally do not own the copyright to materials in our collections.

How to check the copyright for an image? Look for an image credit or contact details. Look for a watermark. Check the image's metadata. Do a Google reverse image search. Search the U.S. Copyright Office Database. +1. If in doubt, don't use it.
