The Independent Hose Company is Frederick County Maryland's Fire & Rescue Station #1. We are Maryland's oldest volunteer Fire Company in continuous operation, instituted in 1818.

Ben Franklin founded the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1736. This fire company was the first volunteer fire company of its kind in the U.S. Soon after this volunteer fire company sprung up, more and more fire companies spread across the city and soon all over the country.

The present Laurel fire station, built in 1877, has become a downtown York landmark, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the oldest continuously operating fire stations in the United States, and has served as a home for hand-drawn, horse-drawn and motorized apparatus.
