Mail forwarding will take into account your previous address and redirect the mail to your new address. When your mail has your previous address on it, it won't go to your previous address, instead it will go to your new address. In other words, USPS will catch your lost letters and redirect them to your new home.

They're essentially the same thing. You change your address with USPS to ensure that mail is forwarded from your old address to your new one. Then you change your address with everyone else to ensure you mail gets to the right place after USPS' forwarding ends (one year).

From the specified start date, USPS begins rerouting mail addressed to your old address to your new address. This includes letters, packages, magazines, and other items sent through USPS. USPS will diligently forward your mail for up to 12 months, giving you ample time to update your address with other organizations.

Non-First Class Mail — this includes items such as presorted standard mail, bulk mail, and non-profit mail. Mail Marked With Change Service Requested — not only are these pieces not forwarded, but they are also not returned. Instead, they will be discarded and the sender will be told about your change of address order.

Standard Mail A (circulars, books, catalogs, and advertising mail) is not forwarded unless requested by the mailer. Standard Mail B (packages weighing 16 ounces or more) are forwarded locally for 12 months at no charge. You pay forwarding charges if you move outside the local area.

Standard mail forwarding lasts 12 months. You can pay to extend mail forwarding for 6, 12, or 18 more months (18 months is the maximum).

If you set up mail forwarding through USPS, only USPS-sent first-class or priority mail will be forwarded. That means you will need to update your address with any person or service that uses private delivery methods, such as UPS, FedEx or Amazon.
