Answer and Explanation: The main theme is the connection between human beings and nature. This is a coming-of-age story that focuses on Omakayas, a member of the Ojibwa community.

Omakayas is crushed when Neewo dies in her arms. She later learns Angeline's friend, Ten Snow, has also died. Old Tallow comes to help with the sick so Omakayas can rest. Although the rest of her family eventually recovers, Omakayas herself becomes sick and weak with grief.

FYI: Erdrich has claimed that the smallpox epidemic she writes about in this novel did indeed happen in 1847, although some readers have expressed skepticism about it.

The Birchbark House is told using the 3rd person narrative point of view.

The author's first novel for children centers on young Omakayas and her Ojibwa family who live on an island in Lake Superior in 1847; PW's Best Books citation called it "captivating." Ages 9-up.

Text Summary The Birchbark House follows Omakayas (o---MA---kay---as), a seven-year-old girl, and her Anishinabe family through a year marked by challenge, tragedy and triumph as they work together to survive on their island home in Lake Superior.

The Birchbark House is a 1999 indigenous juvenile realistic fiction novel by Louise Erdrich, and is the first book in a five book series known as The Birchbark series. The story follows the life of Omakayas and her Ojibwe community beginning in 1847 near present-day Lake Superior.
