It is open to the member to give up some or all of the tax free lump sum in order to improve their taxable pension. This is called inverse commutation.

(AFPS75 / FTRS97) 3 months before your 60th birthday or 3 months before your 65th birthday (you can claim the element of pension due at 65 on an actuarily reduced basis at age 60). (For FTRS you can claim deferred benefits due at 65 on an actuarily reduced basis at any time between age 60 and age 65).

Under AFPS 75, members of the Armed Forces with the same rank and same number of years of reckonable service are normally awarded the same pension, regardless of their actual pay either at retirement or discharge, or earlier in their career. This is known as the representative pay rate for the rank.
