  1. Click ‘Get Form’ button to access the form and open it in the editing interface.
  2. In the 'Project' field, enter the name or identification of the project for which the soil testing is being conducted.
  3. Fill in the 'Source' section with the location from where the soil sample is taken.
  4. Indicate the type of sample in the 'Sample of' field (e.g., soil type).
  5. Enter the quantity represented by the sample in the 'Quantity represented' box.
  6. Note the name of the person who collected the sample in the 'Sampled by' field.
  7. Record the date the sample was taken in the 'Date' field.
  8. Choose either Method A or Method B for testing, and indicate which method was applied.
  9. In the 'Sample No.' field, assign a unique identification number for the sample.
  10. Re-enter the date in the designated area for clarity.
  11. For each determination (1, 2, and 3), fill in the necessary calculations including mass of the container with wet soil, mass of dry soil, mass of water, etc.
  12. Calculate the Water Content using the formula (100 * C/E) for each determination.
  13. Determine the Plastic Limit and enter the values accordingly for each test.
  14. Calculate and input the Final Plastic Limit (PL) and Final Liquid Limit (LL) values.
  15. Complete the calculation for the Plasticity Index (PI) using the formula (LL - PL), and graph the results as needed.
  16. Once all fields are filled adequately, save changes, download, print, or share the completed form as required.

Plastic Limit is determined by repeatedly remolding a small ball of moist plastic soil and manually rolling it out into a 1/8in thread. A plastic limit roller device can also be used to perform this test. The Plastic Limit is the moisture content at which the thread crumbles before being completely rolled out.

The Plastic Limit (PL) is the moisture content at which a fine-grained soil can no longer be remolded without cracking. The Shrinkage Limit (SL) is the moisture content at which a fine-grained soil no longer changes volume upon drying—any loss of moisture is compensated by the entry of air into the pores.

Calculate the plasticity index of a soil as the difference between its liquid limit and its plastic limit, as follows: PI = LL − PL Report PI as non-plastic (NP) when: 1. The liquid limit or the plastic limit cannot be determined, or 2. The plastic limit is equal to or greater than the liquid limit.

The plasticity index is expressed in percent of the dry weight of the soil sample. It shows the size of the range of the moisture contents at which the soil remains plastic. In general, the plasticity index depends only on the amount of clay present.

Take a sample weighing a minimum of 8 grams from the wet material in the evaporating dish used for the liquid limit test. Take the sample at any stage of the mixing process when the material becomes plastic enough to be shaped without excessively sticking to the fingers when squeezed.

The plastic limit of a soil is the lowest moisture content at which the soil remains plastic. The plasticity index of a soil is the range in moisture content, expressed as a percentage of the mass of the oven-dried soil, within which the material is in a plastic state.
