First Stage of Tightening: As a first stage, all bolts in the joint shall be tightened to 'snug tight' condition. Snug tight condition means the nut is tightened using an ordinary wrench by an average worker, applying maximum force on the wrench. This stage is required to bring the plies in close contact.
HSFG bolts are high strength structural bolts which have been tightened such as to induce predefined tension in the bolt shank. Due to the tension in the bolt, the interface between the plies (steel members in a joint) cannot move relative to each other because of the frictional resistance.
Ordinary bolts are generally made of ordinary steel (Q235) and only need to be tightened. Ordinary bolts are generally 4.4, 4.8, 5.6 and 8.8 class. High-strength bolts are generally 8.8 and 10.9 class, of which 10.9 class are mostly. The screw holes of ordinary bolts are not necessarily larger than high-strength bolts.
For HSFG bolts, the property classes to be used are 8, and 10 as specified in IS 1367 (Part 6), suitable for bolts of property class 8.8 and 10.9 respectively. The nuts shall be hardened and then tempered at a temperature of at least 4250C.
The main advantages of HSFG bolted connections are their greater stiffness and their ability to withstand alternating forces. Their behaviour under fatigue loading is also better than that of bearing bolted connections. Against these advantages are the costs of HSFG bolted connections.
Diameter. IS 4000 gives diameters of HSFG bolts as M16, M20, M24, M30 and M36. Other sizes given in IS 1367 include M18, M22 and M27 (Referred to as 'non-preferred' sizes also). For bridge works, these can be used and M22 size is readily available in the market.
Where a traditional bolt will stop the plates in a connection from moving apart by supporting the weight on the bolt shank in the form of shear stress, an HSFG supports the weight by clamping the plates so tightly together that they can't slip past each other.
HSFG (High Strength Friction Grip) bolts are usually made from medium carbon steel and have a higher tensile strength than the ordinary black bolt, as well as improved vibration and impact resistance.
