Nonviolent communication consists of two parts: to express yourself honestly and to listen honestly. Both parts include using the FOUR ELEMENTS OF NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION: observation, feelings, needs and requests.

In NVC, it is thought that feelings arise from met or unmet basic universal needs. Marshall Rosenberg, the originator of Nonviolent Communication, asserts that there are nine major categories of basic human needs, which are often called the “universal human needs”: Sustenance.

The four NVC steps are: Observations. Feelings. Needs. Requests.

It is posited that "Everything we do is in service of our needs." Marshall Rosenberg refers to Max-Neef's model where needs may be categorised into 9 classes: sustenance, safety, love, understanding/empathy, creativity, recreation, sense of belonging, autonomy and meaning.

From NVCWiki. "Need" is the word we use in NVC for the deepest motivations behind anything we think or say, any action or reaction. The need that is most alive in us can change from moment to moment. Even when it is the same need for some period of time, it is arising again and again in each moment.

This Feelings Inventory was developed by the Center for Nonviolent Communication. It provides words we use when we want to express a combination of emotional states and physical sensations. This Feelings Inventory is neither exhaustive nor definitive.

Dian Killian, a certified trainer in Rosenberg's method and collaborative communications consultant, breaks down the four steps: Observe and recap. The NVC process begins with neutral observation. ... Describe emotions, not positions. ... Identify needs. ... Make a request. ... Use the four steps to manage yourself, too.
