One alphabet letter represents consonants and the short vowels, with a few of the most consonant digraphs (sh, th, ch, ng), but from there it gets a bit more complex. In the 'complex code', one phoneme can be represented by more than one grapheme and one grapheme can represent more than one phoneme.

Basic Code, in phonics instruction, refers to the one-to-one relationship between one letter and one sound. For single consonant letters, their most common sound is the one associated with them in the Basic Code. Thus, even though the letter "s" can be the sound /z/ in was or has, its Basic Code sound is the sound /s/.

The alphabetic code is the set of correspondences that exist between the most basic sounds of English (called phonemes) and the letters that symbolize those basic sounds (called graphemes).

The standard "NATO" phonetic alphabet (actually the International Radio-Telephony Spelling Alphabet) is: Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu.

The alphabetic code is the set of correspondences that exist between the most basic sounds of English (called phonemes) and the letters that symbolize those basic sounds (called graphemes).

The 26 code words are as follows (ICAO spellings): Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu.

An Alphabetic Code Chart is a core visual aid which lists the units of sound (42-ish phonemes plus some combined phonemes) down the left hand column with their corresponding spelling alternatives (graphemes) listed across the rows.

The definition of the alphabetic principle in phonics is that the letters in printed words represent sounds in spoken language. The alphabetic code (also known as the phonemic code) is the relationship between individual letters of the alphabet (or groups of letters) and the smallest units of sounds in spoken language.
