Classic EP 140 is recommended for the lubrication of conventional spiral bevel final drives and mild hypoid axles where API GL-4 oils are recommended. It may also be used to lubricate spur and helical gears and for other applications where the manufacturer specifies the use of a high viscosity oil meeting API GL-4.

Applications: MAK Spirol EP 90 provides excellent lubrication of manual gear boxes of bus, passenger cars and trucks operating under high speed-low torque and low speed-high torque conditions. It is suitable for synchromesh gear box and hypoid, spiral bevel and steering worm gear box.

The number "140" refers to the kinematic viscosity of the gear oil at 100 °C. This is within a range of 24.0 - 32.4 mm²/s. The higher the number, the more viscous the oil is. SAE 140 class gear oil is considered to be one of the thickest oils used in passenger cars.

The '140' means that your transmission is expecting an oil that behaves like a SAE140 when it is at 100 deg C, which will be close to your gearboxes maximum working temperature. A '90' will be too thin when at that gearbox's working temp.

Any 90wt (75w-90, 80w-90 etc) gear oil will be fine.

Multigrade gear oils have additives that change their viscosity at different operating temperatures. These gear oils are labeled with a rating for the oil's low- and high-temperature viscosity. For example, SAE 80W-90 gear oil has a low-temperature rating of 80 and a high-temperature rating of 90.
