How to Prepare for a Doctor's Appointment Make a list and prioritize your concerns. Take information with you to the doctor. Consider bringing a family member or friend to the doctor's visit. Keep your doctor up to date. Be sure you can see and hear as well as possible. Request an interpreter if you need one.

Most annual physical examinations require that you arrive fasting: no food or drink after midnight the night before your appointment. Accurate blood sugar and cholesterol levels can be obtained in this manner.

Most of the time, there's nothing special you need to do to prepare for your yearly physical. If you're having blood work done, be sure to fast and drink only water for a specified period of time before your appointment. Prepare a list of prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements you take regularly.

You should also avoid sweets, high-fat foods and generally overeating before the test. “All of these in large quantities can affect the triglycerides in the short term,” Dr. Lee says.

Do drink lots of water before a physical. In general, it's a good idea to hydrate before seeing the doc for a checkup. “Being well hydrated at the time of a physical will make your pulse and blood pressure at their best,” Dr. Dewar says.

Fasting means you don't eat or drink anything but water usually for 8 to 12 hours beforehand. If your appointment is at 8 a.m. and you're told to fast for 8 hours, only water is OK after midnight. If it's a 12-hour fast, avoid food and drink after 8 p.m. the night before.

You are encouraged to drink clear liquids before surgery or anesthesia — NOT milk or dairy products — until 2 hours before the time you are scheduled to arrive at the hospital or surgery center. Staying hydrated is good for you, and it's especially important in hot weather! Clear, see-through liquids include: Water.
