When you hear the term reversed aand remanded in criminal law it means that the lower court's decision was overturned and the case was returned to the lower court. Most successful appeals result in the appellate court reversing the conviction and remanding the case back to the trial court for a new trial.

This unique court hears roughly one-third of all cases submitted to the Nevada Supreme Court in a deflective model, where the Supreme Court assigns cases to a three-judge Court of Appeals. This is similar to systems used in other states, including Iowa, Idaho, and Mississippi.

The Nevada Constitution states that judicial power shall be vested in a court system comprised of a supreme court, district courts, and justices of the peace, and that the Nevada legislature may establish municipal courts.

De novo. De novo is a Latin phrase meaning "from the beginning." In de novo review, the appellate court does not defer to the decisions made in the trial court and looks at the issue as if the trial court had never ruled on it.

Appellate jurisdiction means that the Court has the authority to review the decisions of lower courts. Most of the cases the Supreme Court hears are appeals from lower courts.

An appellate court can affirm the ruling that was the subject of the appeal. In doing so, the court agrees that the prior ruling was “valid and right and must stand as rendered below” Courts, administrative boards, and other similar bodies have used “affirm” to mean “approve”

The Supreme Court has appellate jurisdiction in all civil cases arising in district court and in questions of law in criminal cases within the original jurisdiction of the district courts.
