The Mobile Azalea Trail Maids are a group of intelligent, diverse and ambitious young ladies, in their senior year of high school, who serve as goodwill ambassadors for the city of Mobile, AL. Each year, a court of 50 young ladies are selected to participate in this long standing tradition.

The trail traces its beginnings to an effort by the Mobile Junior Chamber of Commerce during the 1920s that saw the planting of azaleas along the city's streets. Following the establishment of the trail, dignitaries were invited to officially open the trail each spring, with local debutantes serving as event hostesses.

The Trail Maids dress in antebellum style dresses that are made for each individual girl....You will be judged on the following criteria: Scholastics—20% Delivery & presentation—20% Personal appearance— 20% Knowledge of Mobile history and attractions—20% Knowledge of current events—20%

8. Their colors are assigned randomly. Although each girl lists her top three color choices, she is assigned a color that she receives at a queen's reception. The five colors represent Spring.

The Mobile Azalea Trail had its beginnings in 1929, when the Mobile Junior Chamber of Commerce undertook a project to encourage citizens of our community to plant azaleas along the Port City's thoroughfares. The blossom-lined streets became known as the Mobile Azalea Trail.

In 1949, Mobile's four local high schools were asked to appoint two senior girls to serve on what was to become the first Azalea Trail Court. Mary Edmunds of Murphy High School was selected to serve as the first queen under the new high school-oriented program.

In 1935, the first court of maids took place. Each spring the official opening of the Azalea Trail was done by a handful of local debutantes and the city's Mardi Gras royalty. The first Azalea Trail Queen was to be selected was New York City ballerina Marion Bancroft Marshall (?-2000), who served in 1939.

The Azalea Trail Maids are a group of fifty high school seniors chosen yearly to serve as "Official Ambassadors" for the city of Mobile, Alabama. The Maids, wearing dresses meant to evoke Southern charm and hospitality, make appearances at many local, state, and national events.
