Get Handwriting Assessment Workshop

This protocol was designed to identify the specific areas in which a child is having difficulty with handwriting and to help occupational therapists determine whether and where to intervene. This handwriting assessment protocol is designed to look at the occupation of handwriting.

Occupational therapists observe and analyze all components of handwriting including cognition, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory processing abilities, visual motor skills, and in-depth components of handwriting itself including legibility, formation, size, spacing, line use, fluidity, and orientation.

The Test of Handwriting Skills, Revised (THS-R) assesses a child's neurosensory integration skills in both manuscript and cursive writing -- skills that are often disrupted in students with learning difficulties.

The DASH assessment is an assessment that can take place in clinic, at home or in school. It is completed by the occupational therapist through interacting with the child in writing several different tasks, ranging from words per minute to the best handwriting they can master.

Learning Without Tears is an approved provider of continuing education by the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. (AOTA).

For example, letter formation, spacing, alignment, legibility and uniformity of slope and size of letters will all be evaluated. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the underlying flaws in the foundations that make up handwriting.
