James Hardie recommends 6-in. wide flashing that overlaps the course below by 1 in. Some local building codes may require different size flashing. Joint-flashing material must be durable, waterproof materials that do not react with cement products.

James Hardie lap siding planks are intended to overlap each other by 1¼ inch -- in other words, you have a 1¼-inch space in which to place the fastener so the next course can cover it. James Hardie recommends placing the fastener 1 inch from the top of the board, near the bottom of the nailing box.

Keep the bottom edge of the first course even with the bottom ofMoreCheck for level and straightness. Keep the bottom edge of the first course even with the bottom of the corner trim. It is a good practice to snap a chalk line every three to five courses.

James Hardie prefers and recommends installation of HardiePlank® lap siding by the blind nailing technique, such that fasteners are hidden by the course above. Fasteners shall be installed between 1 in. and 3/4 in. from the top edge and no closer than 3/8 in.

Lap siding shall be lapped not less than 11/4 inches (32 mm) and lap siding not having tongue-and-groove end joints shall have the ends protected with caulking, covered with an H-section joint cover, located over a strip of flashing or shall be otherwise designed to comply with Section 1402.2.

Fiber-cement panels butt together at the edges, making layout a no-brainer. With clapboards and shingles, each course overlaps the next by at least 1¼ inches. The portion that's visible—not overlapped—is called the exposure. (A 6¼-inch-wide clapboard with a 1¼-inch overlap has a 5-inch exposure.)

James Hardie siding and trim products can be installed over braced wood or steel studs spaced at a maximum of 24 in. on center or directly to 7/16 in. thick OSB or equivalent sheathing. These products can also be installed over solid-foam insulation board up to 1 inch thick.

James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding Design The “Exposure” or Reveal means how much of the lap siding is visible. The standard new construction siding and most economic option is a 7” reveal exposure (8 1/4” James Hardie Plank board with a 1 ¼” overlap per James Hardie Elite Contractor Preferred Guidelines).
