Surfclams are the most important commercial clam species harvested in the United States. Commercial fishermen harvest surfclams with hydraulic clam dredges—essentially large, heavy sleds pulled along the sea floor.

Commercial shellfish harvesters must have a valid State of Maine Commercial Shellfish License to do any commercial harvesting of shellfish. In addition, commercial harvesters need a Town of Bar Harbor Commercial Shellfish License to harvest soft-shelled clams.

Dredging. Commonly used for the commercial harvesting of scallops, clams, oysters and mussels, a dredge consists of a metal rectangular frame to which a bag-shaped net of metal rings has been attached. The frame's lower end is called the raking bar and is often equipped with metal teeth used to dig up the bottom.

They are the second most economically valuable fishery in the state behind lobster and sustain people's livelihoods up and down the coast. Since 1980, however, the number of clams harvested has declined by nearly 75%, primarily because of green crabs (Carcinus maenas), which prey on soft shell clams.

The energy expended in spawning makes the steamers weak. Yet, there are also other reasons why Maine supply is strapped during those months: Areas have been dug out or closed. Towards the end of summer, many steamer beds are empty because they have already been picked through earlier in the season.

Plunge, rake or dig a hole with your hands about a foot deep. Be careful not to break the clam and very careful not to cut your finger when reaching down to extract the clam from its hole. The top edges of the clam are sharp, so grab carefully (think paper cut from a cardboard box, rubbed liberally with salt).

Soft Shell Clams Harvest season is year-round, peak is May through October. Soft shelled clams are regulated by DMR and coastal towns with a shellfish conservation ordinance. Many towns require recreational licenses which can be obtained through the town office or municipal shellfish warden.

The Shellfish Conservation Committee was established by adoption of the Shellfish Conservation Ordinance at the March 1992 annual town meeting. The purpose of the program is to insure the protection and optimum utilization of shellfish resources and industry within the Town of Waldoboro.
