Why was Thomas Nelson College renamed?

Thomas Nelson's board voted unanimously in February to change the school's name to better reflect the institution's values of inclusion and diversity. Two buildings on campus are also named after Nelson's associates and so will be renamed.

Thomas Nelson Community College is a public institution in Hampton, Virginia.

The local board recommended the name change to Virginia Peninsula Community College on Sept. 1. School leaders said they were focused on not using an individual's name and wanted to have a timeless name that focused on the area's geography and was inclusive for all students.

The name of Thomas Nelson Community College is history. Effective Friday, the school will be called Virginia Peninsula Community College, a change two years in the making.

Porter Brannon came on board almost a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, which had forced abrupt changes at the college's campuses in Hampton and the Historic Triangle. She also arrived as VPCC's stakeholders were in the process of changing its longtime name, Thomas Nelson Community College.

The Virginia State Board for Community Colleges, on a recommendation from the Thomas Nelson College Local Advisory Board, voted to change the name of the College to Virginia Peninsula Community College.
