In the end, a BOL can be created by one of three entities: the shipper, the carrier or the 3PL working on the shipper's behalf. Oftentimes a shipper will prefer to use their own BOL generated through their ERP system as it can be super specific and customized to what they need.

Each bill of lading is actually two documents, each containing the same information. Both copies must be signed by the shipper and then also by the receiver when the shipment is delivered. (In addition, the driver signs on the carrier's behalf.) If you use paper forms, you'll have two physical copies of every BOL.

A BOL is required for all freight shipments, regardless of transportation method or piece count, and must contain specific information to be considered legally binding.

A bill of lading (BL or BoL) is a legal document issued by a carrier (transportation company) to a shipper that details the type, quantity, and destination of the goods being carried.1 A bill of lading also serves as a shipment receipt when the carrier delivers the goods at a predetermined destination.

Every freight shipment starts and ends with a straight (non-negotiable) BOL, as it lays out the contents and appropriate transportation of the shipment. It also protects the seller, shipper and recipient, and will be referenced if litigation arises from issues related to the freight shipment.

The bill of lading is a necessary document for freight shipment. The shipper fills it out and gives it to the carrier at pickup. BOL could be considered a receipt, a proof of the contract between the shipper and the carrier.

A bill of lading has three main purposes. First, it is a document of title to the goods described in the bill of lading. Second, it is a receipt for the shipped products. Finally, it represents the agreed terms and conditions for the transportation and eventual release of the shipped goods.

Every carrier should carry a bill of lading showing, at a minimum, all of this information during a shipment. This isn't all of the information on a bill of lading, however.
