The Supplementary Death Benefit is a lump-sum benefit equal to twice your annual salary, payable to your designated beneficiary or to your estate. If that amount is not a multiple of $1,000, your benefit coverage is adjusted to the next highest multiple of $1,000.

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) survivor's pension is paid to the person who, at the time of death, is the legal spouse or common-law partner of the deceased contributor. If you are a separated legal spouse and the deceased had no cohabiting common-law partner, you may qualify for this benefit.

Who should apply for the Canada Pension Plan Death benefit? The CPP Death benefit is a one-time, lump-sum payment made to the estate of the deceased contributor. If there is a will, the executor named in the will to administer the estate must apply for the Death Benefit within 60 days of the date of death.
