Use Form 6251 to figure the amount, if any, of your alternative minimum tax (AMT). The AMT applies to taxpayers who have certain types of income that receive favorable treatment, or who qualify for certain deductions, under the tax law.

Form 6251 Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), is used to determine the amount of alternative minimum tax (AMT) that a taxpayer may owe. If you don't have form 6251 and you didn't pay any AMT, you can delete the form. Delete Form 6251 by following these steps: From the left menu, select Tax Tools then Tools.

When you complete Form 6251, you must attach it to your personal tax return. However, you must also transfer the amount of AMT you are liable for to your Form 1040. Your Form 1040 has a specific line item where you can report the AMT so that your total tax is reported on the tax return.

A good strategy for minimizing your AMT liability is to keep your adjusted gross income (AGI) as low as possible. Some options: Participate in a 401(k), 403(b), SARSEP, 457(b) plan, or SIMPLE IRA by making the maximum allowable salary deferral contributions.

Phaseout for the 2022 tax year starts at $539,900 for individuals and $1,079,800 for married couples filing jointly.

This means that for a single person who earned more than $75,900 in 2022, but less than $206,100, the AMT rate is 26 percent....Who has to pay the AMT? To figure out whether you owe any additional tax under the Alternative Minimum Tax system, you need to fill out Form 6251. If the tax calculated on Form 6251 is higher than that calculated on your regular tax return, you have to pay the difference as AMT in addition to the regularly calculated income tax.
