Iowa imposes a tax on the sales price of transactions made by retailers who sell tangible personal property, taxable services, or specified digital products. Retailers must collect, report, and remit a 6% sales tax on these transactions.

Some items are exempt from sales and use tax, including: Sales of certain food products for human consumption (many groceries) Sales to the U.S. Government. Sales of prescription medicine and certain medical devices. Sales of items paid for with food stamps.

Nontaxable income won't be taxed, whether or not you enter it on your tax return. The following items are deemed nontaxable by the IRS: Inheritances, gifts and bequests. Cash rebates on items you purchase from a retailer, manufacturer or dealer.

Food sales from a delicatessen of prepared foods by a grocery store are generally subject to sales tax. If several items are sold together as part of a meal and they are not separately itemized, the total amount charged for the meal is subject to sales tax.
