When Do I Not Have to File Schedule D? You don't have to file Schedule D if you don't have any capital gains or losses to report from investments or from a business venture or partnership.

Use Schedule D (Form 1040) to report the following: The sale or exchange of a capital asset not reported on another form or schedule. Gains from involuntary conversions (other than from casualty or theft) of capital assets not held for business or profit.

You'll have to file a Schedule D form if you realized any capital gains or losses from your investments in taxable accounts. That is, if you sold an asset in a taxable account, you'll need to file. Investments include stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, options, real estate, futures, cryptocurrency and more.

Use Schedule H (Form 1040) to report household employment taxes if you paid cash wages to a household employee and the wages were subject to social security, Medicare, or FUTA taxes, or if you withheld federal income tax.

If you are age 65 or older, your standard deduction increases by $1,700 if you file as single or head of household. If you are legally blind, your standard deduction increases by $1,700 as well. If you are married filing jointly and you OR your spouse is 65 or older, your standard deduction increases by $1,350.

Capital Gain Distributions Instead, they are included on Form 1099-DIV as ordinary dividends. Enter on Schedule D, line 13, the total capital gain distributions paid to you during the year, regardless of how long you held your investment.
