The business privilege tax is an annual tax paid by corporations and limited liability entities (including disregarded entities) for the privilege of conducting business in Alabama. The Alabama Business Tax law is found in Chapter 14A, Title 40, Code of Alabama 1975.

Privilege taxes are imposed on businesses for the right to conduct business in a given state. Privilege taxes are usually based on the gross receipts or net worth of a business, but some are levied as a flat fee.

By state law, Alabama corporations, limited liability companies, limited liability partnerships, and limited partnerships are required to file an Alabama Business Privilege Tax Return each year.

The tax rate for business privilege tax is graduated based on the entity's federal taxable income apportioned to Alabama. The rates range from $0.25 to $1.75 for each $1,000 of net worth in Alabama. The minimum business privilege tax is $100.

Form PPT. This is the Alabama Business Privilege Tax Return and Annual Report for Pass Through Entities Only. Form BPT-V. This is the Business Privilege Payment Voucher.

BPT Account Number – Enter the taxpayer's BPT (Business Privilege Tax) account number only if the taxpayer does not have an FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number). The account number is issued when the account is opened and is provided in the notice advising the taxpayer of the Business Privilege Tax liability.
