Considered the largest eagle in the world in terms of length and wing surface, the giant Philippine eagle averages one meter in height (3 ft) from the tip of its crown feathers to its tail. Only the harpy and Steller's sea eagles outweighs the Philippine eagle in terms of mass.

Because of hunting and deforestation, the eagles have become critically endangered. Philippine eagles are found on four of the more than 6,000 islands in the Philippines: Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao.

Humans kill them to protect domestic animals, or to eliminate competition for a sought-after prey species. The Philippine eagle also was a prized trophy for hunters.

In size, the birds are almost similar in height, weight, and wingspan, with the Philippine Eagle being just slightly larger overall. But the difference is less than 10%. Both have also been recorded hunting and eating other birds of prey when the situation allowed it.

400 pairs They are also listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with an estimated number of only 400 pairs left in the wild. The Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is a bird of prey that can be found only in the Philippines. It is also called the monkey-eating eagle, as well as agila ("eagle"), haribon, haring ibon ("king bird") and banog ("kite") by the locals. This eagle is known to be the largest eagle in wing surface and length.

Despite being heralded as the country's national bird, the Philippine Eagle is threatened by destruction of nesting sites as a result of deforestation, accidental capture in traps set for wild pigs and illegal hunting by farmers in retaliation to predation of domestic animals and livestock.

The Philippine Eagle, our national bird, is the largest eagle in the world. This magnificent bird proudly stands at one (1) meter in height and has a wingspan of about two (2) meters. The head is adorned with pointed crown feathers known as a "crest" and possesses a massive arched beak.

The forest is the only home for the Great Philippine Eagle. It is where they obtain food, reproduce, and nourish their offspring. Unfortunately, illegal logging and irresponsible use of resources have resulted to the disappearance of their forest habitat that brings deathly consequences to the species.
