Tension control is the act of maintaining the desired amount of tension on the web, based on the needs of the material. Meaning the tension is measured and maintained at the desired setpoint, thus allowing the web to run smoothly throughout the entire production process.

Tension control is also essential for preventing yarn breakage during weaving. When the tension of the yarn is not properly adjusted, it can snap or break, leading to production interruptions and increased costs.

It can be used either in rewinding or unwinding stations or as a brake controller or intermediate line drive. Signal processing and control are digital, resulting in excellent temperature and long-term stability behavior.

Mathematically, tension equals torque divided by radius. This means that as a roll diameter increases or decreases, torque must be adjusted to maintain tension at the optimal value, or setpoint. So in a basic sense, by controlling the torque in a uniform manner in relation to the roll, we control tension.

To try to keep tension constant as the roll diameter changes, the operator must adjust the control output as he thinks it is necessary. Example: Driving a car equipped with a sensor that detects changes in incline and makes the accelerator adjustment to try to keep speed constant.

Tension control is the ability to permanently control the mechanical tension in any material (mainly the raw material available in roll size). This control has to be operated dynamically and statically. On every machine the operator should be only concerned by the speed and operation.

The controller compares the current tension to the desired tension and adjusts the brake or clutch to keep the desired tension. Closed-loop controllers are extremely accurate and can maintain precise tension control even at high speeds. Open-loop controllers use a set-point to adjust the tension of the brake or clutch.

How do tension controls work? The simplest and least expensive method of tension control is manual. They can be as simple as a potentiometer adjusting the torque output of a drive or magnetic particle brake or clutch or an air regulator adjusting the air pressure and therefore torque output of an air brake or clutch.
