Chargebacks are a consumer protection tool that allow consumers to get their money back for fraudulent charges or purchases that don't live up to standards by submitting a dispute with their card issuer.

The terms 'chargeback', 'refund' and 'reversal' are often confused and conflated. Yet they have specific meanings in the card industry. A chargeback is a return of funds to a customer's card account after they dispute a card payment on their statement. A refund is a repayment of a sum of money.

What is a chargeback? If a cardholder wishes to dispute a card transaction processed by your business, it may result in the value of the transaction being taken from your business and refunded back to the cardholder – this is called a 'chargeback'. There are a number of reasons for a chargeback.

A chargeback is a transaction where funds are transferred by an issuing bank from the merchant's account to the customer's account. A chargeback is initiated when a customer escalates a dispute against the merchant.

OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO LODGE A DISPUTE: Telephone: Please contact ANZ on 13 13 14 ANZ Internet Banking: Select “Lodge a transaction dispute” from the Account Actions screen or SecureMail section. Please tick ✓ the ONE that is most appropriate and ensure that you attach the supporting documentation.

Some of the most common reasons for chargebacks include items arriving damaged or defective, merchants not providing the goods or services in a timely fashion, buyer's remorse, and criminal fraud.

Scheme rules which apply to your card transaction (such as Visa, Mastercard or EFTPOS) impose time limits which may apply to your dispute. Per these scheme requirements ANZ must lodge a fully detailed claim on your behalf within 120 days of the transaction date1.

A chargeback is the payment amount that is returned to a debit or credit card, after a customer disputes the transaction or simply returns the purchased item. The chargeback process can be initiated by either the merchant or the cardholder's issuing bank.
