Cue (Recall) Column As you study the material in your notes, you should devise questions which the notes answer (think "Jeopardy"). These questions are the "cues" that should be written in the cue column.

When you are taking notes during a lecture, it is good to listen and watch for “cues” or signs that tell you what information is important and how the lecture is organized. Cues can be words, phrases or actions (such as the professor writing on the board).

Taking Cornell notes is straightforward: all actual notes from the lecture go into the main note-taking column....The page is divided into 4 — or sometimes only 3 — different sections: One block at the top of the page. Two columns. One block at the bottom of the page.

The Cornell Note Taking method discourages the use of long sentences. It is about short notes that you write down in the right-hand column using recognizable abbreviations and symbols. Prior to the note taking, draw up a list of abbreviations and expressions. This makes the note-taking process even easier.

Step 1: RECORD LECTURE NOTES. Step 2: REVIEW YOUR NOTES and CREATE YOUR SELF-TEST COLUMN. Step 3: SUMMARIZE YOUR NOTES. Step 4: TEST YOURSELF. Stage 5: REHEARSE THE INFORMATION FREQUENTLY. Review/self-test column. Record your lecture notes in this column 32 (notes page#) Summary.

The Cornell Method of Note Taking for Lectures Write the topic and date at the top of the page. On a divided sheet of paper, write lecture notes on the right‐ hand side (Note Taking Column). Take notes on only the front side of the page. After lecture, reduce the notes to key ideas on the left‐hand side (Cue Column).
