painDETECT is a nine-item questionnaire that consists of seven sensory symptom items for pain that are graded from 0= never to 5= strongly, one temporal item on pain-course pattern graded −1 to +1, and one spatial item on pain radiation graded 0 for no radiation or +2 for radiating pain.

This scale measures 10 specific qualities associated with neuropathic pain; 7 of the 10 pain qualities contain the words: intense, sharp, hot, dull, cold, and itchy to characterize the patient's pain, and the word "sensitive" describes the patient's pain reaction to light touch or clothing.

Aims: DN4 (Douleur Neuropathique en 4 Questions) is a screening tool for neuropathic pain consisting of interview questions (DN4-interview) and physical tests. It has not formally been validated in diabetes.

Aims: DN4 (Douleur Neuropathique en 4 Questions) is a screening tool for neuropathic pain consisting of interview questions (DN4-interview) and physical tests.

Suggested screening tools are the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS)8 and the S-LANSS (for self-report). Patient assessment with LANSS is based on analysis of the sensory description of pain and on bedside examination of sensory dysfunction such as allodynia or hyperalgesia.

Scores are based on patient responses to questions about pain intensity. 0 indicates no pain; 10 indicates the most pain imaginable. The NPS is only for use in patients who have already been diagnosed with neuropathic pain, and should not be used to determine IF a patient's pain is secondary to neuropathy.

The total score is calculated as the sum of the 10 items and the cut-off value for the diagnosis of neuropathic pain is a total score of 4/10.
