Honours. Students are to complete the Honours application form with their supervisor and create a course outline. Send both documents to the Department offering the course for approval. Biochemistry students forward the application to the Home Department of their supervisor for approval.

Directed Study is designed to be a substitute for a traditional course that is not offered in the semester for which the student wishes to enroll. The material covered in such courses is essentially the same as that covered in the traditional course.

Complete a project outline for your directed study with the concurrence of the faculty member which should include: Statement of your topic/issue. Importance and/or relevance of the topic. Your learning objectives. Resources and/or data you plan to use. Statement of expected results or conclusion. Proposed bibliography.

Most UBC programs require you to have completed a few specific high school courses. They also require you to achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA). This minimum GPA is typically around 80%. However, we recommend aiming for a GPA in the 90% range to be a competitive candidate.

If you would like to undertake a directed study, you must find a faculty member to supervise your project and create a proposal using our 'best practices' model. Your chosen faculty supervisor and the chair of your program must approve the proposal.

The Student Directed Seminars program provides upper-year undergraduate students the opportunity to propose, coordinate, and lead their own 3-credit seminar class with a small group of peers on a topic not currently offered at UBC Okanagan.

A directed study is a coherent, well-defined, substantive reading and research project supervised by a faculty member, usually resulting in a major written document. It is not credit for work experience.
