4) CACO Selected - The ISC DAO responsible for the area where the PNOK resides identifies the Coast Guard Command nearest the PNOK and tasks them to appoint a CACO to personally notify the PNOK. The Command appoints the CACO.

A Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (CACO) is the official representative of the Secretary of the Navy who provides information, resources and assistance to the PNOK and SNOK in the event of a casualty.

Navy Casualty's sole mission is to provide timely and first class casualty assistance to Navy families when a Sailor is seriously ill or injured, is placed in a duty status whereabouts unknown (DUSTWUN), or is declared missing and/or Prisoner of War or dies.

Casualty Assistance Calls Program (CACP) requires that a uniformed Navy representative be designated to assist the Primary Next-of-Kin (PNOK) and the Secondary Next-of-Kin (SNOK) of Sailors who have suffered a casualty.

Even if a minor, the spouse is always considered the primary next of kin. The following order of precedence is used to identify the primary next of kin: Spouse. Natural, adopted, step and illegitimate children.

You'll be screened to make sure you meet the physical, academic and moral standards to serve in the Navy. The process includes testing for vocational aptitude, a medical exam, a background screening, career counseling and job selection, and an enlistment or commissioning oath.

The CACO program provides strategic direction and oversight to the Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (CACO) Program to enhance support to Navy families, the Regions, and CACOs.
