Training is at the student's pace and convenience. Due to the amount of homework, the average rating takes 3-4 months. If done part-time the rating can take up to a year.

Personal Requirements: Be 18 Years of Age. Read, write, speak and understand English. Hold a Medical Certificate. Hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate or an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate. Hold a Flight Instructor Certificate with an Airplane Category and Single-Engine Class Rating.

To become a ground instructor, you must pass one or more of the ground instructor knowledge tests. You have 2.5 hours to take each test and you must score at least 70% to pass. Each rating requires a different breadth of knowledge. You may take one test at a time or aim to get one, standalone ground instructor rating.

A CFI is required to have an instrument rating on their pilot certificate.

An instructor proficiency check is an assessment of a pilot's competency to conduct flight instruction. The standards for instructor proficiency checks are prescribed in Schedule 6 of the Part 61 MOS.

It takes approximately 12 months to obtain your Certified Flight Instructor rating (subject to scheduling).

Requirements for MEI are: Valid multi-Engine commercial pilot w/ instrument rating. or ATP Pilot Certificate. Read, speak, write, and understand English. At least 15 hours PIC in the category and class of aircraft appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought.

Typically, CFI and CFII courses each take approximately 15 hours of flight training to complete. The MEI course usually requires additional 10 hours of flight training.

Requirements. The instructor rating consists of a Minimum of 30 hours dual instruction, 25 hours ground briefing time, a written exam and a flight test.

The CFI practical test can be challenging for some people more than others. Generally, while the transition to flying from the right seat is simple, many CFI applicants who are very good, safe pilots struggle initially to practice teaching and explaining concepts and maneuvers.
