Bob Kearns, father of Dennis Kearns and five other children, was a brilliant Detroit physics professor who single-handedly invented and patented the intermittent windshield wiper.

Kearns had six children with his wife Phyllis, although they separated, supposedly as a result of the stress from the legal battle. He died of brain cancer at the age of 77.... The story focuses on Robert Kearns (played by Greg Kinnear) and his legal battle against the Ford Motor Company after they developed an intermittent windshield wiper based on ideas the inventor had patented.

Mr. Kearns received neither credit nor compensation for his patented invention, but continued to believe he had not been betrayed. Until July 1976.

Kearns' vision was already impaired as a result of an accident nine years earlier, when, on his wedding night, he was hit in the left eye by a flying champagne cork.

Robert Kearns, PhD (CIT '64), attributed his invention of the intermittent windshield wiper to a wedding night accident: As he was opening a champagne bottle in his hotel room, the cork flew off and hit him in the eye, leaving him with impaired vision.

Kearns, a onetime Wayne State University professor, received numerous patents in 1967 for his design for wipers that pause between swipes for use in very light rain or mist. The invention permits the driver to set the interval at which the wiper sweeps the window.

The company's response: They had not stolen Kearns' idea and his patent was invalid on the grounds that it wasn't “sufficiently inventive.” In 1978, Kearns filed a patent infringement suit against Ford, seeking $350m — $50 for every intermittent-wiper-equipped car Ford sold.
