This personal dosimeter is worn on the torso and displays immediate dose and dose rate on the small monitor. Electronic personal dosimeters use a metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET or MOS transistor) that triggers an alarm when radiation levels exceed regulatory compliance.

One of the downsides that come with using a TLD dosimeter is that it can only be read one time. A TLD dosimeter reading can be used multiple times; however, they cannot be read more than once, after the TLD dosimeter has been used. This occurs because TLD is “zeroed” at the end of the readout process.

The TLD and OSLD systems are intended to be used under very strict irradiation and read-out conditions. The uncertainty in the dose determination is 1.3% for TLD and 1.6% for OSLD at the one sigma level. This accuracy allows for a tolerance of ±5% to be used for output check.

How do TLDs work? When certain chemical compounds such as lithium fluoride, lithium borate and calcium sulphate are exposed to ionising radiation and then heated they give off visible light i.e. they luminesce. Furthermore the quantity of light emitted is proportional to the radiation dose over a wide range of doses.

TLDs are used for measuring gamma, x-ray, and beta radiation exposures. They can be worn as rings or body badges. They contain small chips of lithium fluoride, which absorb ionizing radiation energy and displace electrons from their ground state.

How it works. A TLD is a phosphor, such as lithium fluoride (LiF) or calcium fluoride (CaF), in a solid crystal structure. When a TLD is exposed to ionizing radiation at ambient temperatures, the radiation interacts with the phosphor crystal and deposits all or part of the incident energy in that material.

Radiation workers wear thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) to monitor exposure of their extremities to radiation. TLDs should be worn on the dominant hand facing inward (toward the palm) because this position provides a more accurate reading (1,2).

Thermoluminescence dosimetry (TLD) is a versatile tool for the assessment of dose from ionising radiation. The wide variety of TLD materials and their different physical forms allow the determination of different radiation qualities at dose levels from microGy to kGy.
